The North Shore Ballet Centre was first opened about 35 years ago in Chatswood on the Pacific Highway by Keitha Cahill nee Keitha Ross Munro a former dancer/stage manager from the Borovansky Ballet.
Keitha approached a friend Margaret Walker to join her on this venture with the idea to supply dancewear to the students and teachers on Sydney’s North Shore. At that time there were only three major supplies all based in the centre of the city of Sydney. They were of course the well known Salvios, Barries and Bloch. Keitha approached all the suppliers not wishing to promote one individual brand.
The intention was to provide a shop allowing the dancer to be able to choose from all brands enabling them to have the best-suited product for their individual body type. This mantra still holds today.
The NSBC started in a tiny one room above an Art shop and the first sale was a hair net! It has certainly grown enormously since then and at one stage had three shops based in Chatswood, Hornsby and Brookvale.
Partners have come and gone however it is still very much a family business operated today by Peter Cahill Keitha’s son. Chatswood is the only retail outlet now, with a huge wholesale development supplying to other shops all over Australia.
Generations have grown up being fitted with their first ballet shoes from the NSBC. The atmosphere of a “true ballet shop” has been maintained over the years with individual and caring attention to each customer.
